My husband Mike and I taught English at a college in mainland China for a year and a half, from 2004–2006. During this time we kept a blog to share some of our adventures with friends and family.
The experiences we had while living in China and traveling throughout Asia were some of the most amazing and life-changing adventures of our lives – from our base in the Hunan province, we traveled to Chengdu, Lhasa, Mt. Everest, Kathmandu and Hong Kong in the summer of 2005. I wanted to showcase our experiences as best as I could, so I challenged myself with a project: to design a magazine. The result was a 32-page digital publication that was available for our readers to download as a PDF.
Given the dense population of Asia, along with the challenges of clearly being cultural outsiders, it was important to me to create a piece with lots of whitespace, allowing the text and photos to have their own voice. All of the writing, photographs and artwork is original – Mike and I both contributed using our combined skills in photography and writing, and I created the magazine layout and illustrations.
